Rural propane delivery fees explained
Which fees can appear on a rural propane bill, why they exist, and how to ask for an all-in delivered price.
A low cents-per-gallon number can hide fees, though not every supplier adds them. Ask every supplier for an all-in delivered total for your address, and for the gallons it assumes.
Fees you may see
Not every supplier charges all of these, and some fold them into the gallon price. The point is to find out which, not to assume.
- Flat delivery or fuel-surcharge fee per stop.
- Minimum delivery quantity or minimum-charge fee.
- Hazmat, environmental, or regulatory line items.
- Tank rental or account fee.
- Urgent, after-hours, or will-call premium.
- Low-usage or inactive-account fee.
Why rural homes may see more of it
Longer drives, fewer stops per route, and weather-affected roads can raise the cost of reaching an address. That cost is recovered in the gallon price, a fee, or both.
Comparing offers fairly
Convert every offer to the same basis: total dollars divided by gallons for a specific fill size. That makes a low rate with a heavy fee comparable to a higher rate with none.
Hypothetical: two quotes, same 200-gallon fill
Two suppliers quote differently.
| Supplier X: $3.10 per gallon + $75 fee | $695 total, $3.475 per gallon |
|---|---|
| Supplier Y: $3.40 per gallon, no fee | $680 total, $3.40 per gallon |
| At 100 gallons | X = $385 ($3.85), Y = $340 ($3.40) |
All dollar figures in this worked example are hypothetical round numbers chosen to show the arithmetic. They are not EIA data, not a quote, and not a prediction.
