Automatic propane delivery guide
How automatic (keep-full) propane delivery works, what the trigger level means, and who it suits.
With automatic delivery, the supplier schedules fills for you, usually from a usage estimate such as degree-days or from a tank monitor, so you rarely call. It reduces the risk of running out but moves the scheduling decision, and sometimes pricing terms, to the supplier.
How the trigger works
Suppliers commonly estimate when your tank will reach a set percentage using weather and past use, or read it with a remote monitor. Ask which method is used and what percentage triggers a delivery.
Tradeoffs
Convenience and fewer emergencies on one side; less control over timing and sometimes a different price structure than will-call on the other.
- Are automatic customers priced differently from will-call?
- Are fees waived or added?
- What if the estimate is wrong and you run low?
- Can you pause or cancel without penalty?
Who it fits
Rural or remote homes where running out is costly and road access is difficult in winter. If you like to shop each fill, will-call preserves that.
Hypothetical: trigger percentage
A made-up 500-gallon tank with a 30 percent trigger.
| Tank at trigger | 150 gallons |
|---|---|
| Fill to 80% (400 gallons) | About 250 gallons delivered |
| If trigger were 20% | About 300 gallons delivered, less buffer before empty |
All dollar figures in this worked example are hypothetical round numbers chosen to show the arithmetic. They are not EIA data, not a quote, and not a prediction.
