How many gallons of propane does a home use?

A method for estimating your own propane use from delivery records and appliances, without relying on generic gallon claims.

Direct answer

There is no honest single number. Use depends on house size and insulation, which appliances run on propane, thermostat habits, and weather. The reliable answer is in your own delivery receipts; if you have none, ask your supplier or the previous owner.

Start with your records

Add up gallons delivered over the last twelve months. If you refill at different gauge levels, adjust: gallons delivered plus or minus the change in tank level from start to end gives a more accurate figure.

What drives the difference between homes

Propane may heat the house, heat water, run a dryer or range, fuel a generator, or all of them. A home that only runs a range and dryer will look very different from a whole-house furnace.

  • Heating: the largest swing factor in cold climates.
  • Water heating: steady year-round load.
  • Cooking and drying: smaller, steady loads.
  • Generators and fireplaces: occasional but real.

New to a house?

Ask your supplier whether they can estimate based on appliances and square footage, and treat the answer as a planning range. Re-check after your first season.

Tank size is not annual use

A 500-gallon tank is a storage size, not a statement about use. Tanks are generally filled to a safe level below capacity, so ask your supplier the usable fill.

Hypothetical: estimating from receipts

A made-up household has three deliveries in the past year.

Delivery 1150 gallons
Delivery 2210 gallons
Delivery 3120 gallons
Tank 30% at start, 45% at end of a 500-gallon tank+75 gallons of stored fuel (15% of 500)
Estimated use480 delivered - 75 added to storage = 405 gallons

These gallon numbers are invented for the arithmetic and are not typical use for any real home.

Checklist

  • Gather twelve months of delivery receipts.
  • Note tank gauge at the start and end of the period.
  • List every propane appliance in the home.
  • Ask your supplier for their own estimate and how they made it.
  • Re-run the math after each full heating season.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a standard usage number?
Not one we can support. Use your own records.
Will the calculator tell me my use?
It estimates cost from gallons you enter. It does not know your home.
Does a colder winter always mean more use?
Generally more heating demand, but insulation and habits matter too.
